All the big 5 banks (RBC, TD, Scotiabank, BMO & CIBC) have student packages, that generally are free for a few months at least (i know TD’s student account is free) and within the package, there is a student credit card that you can get. It starts small, at around $500 (great way to build credit), but as you use it and pay it on time each month, your credit gets better and you may get higher limit soon.

Remember to pay off your credit cards in full each month because the interest rates are really high.

You can also reply at retail stores like Canadian Tire and Walmart. When you go to the store, they generally ask you for it. I know many students who were not given a card by the banks, but got one from Canadian Tire. There is also Capital one. Only problem with these cards is they are high interest rates, but if you pay in full every month, then interest rate does not matter. If you don’t, its going to cost you a lot.
